On being invested

Today would have been his 65th birthday.

My late husband, Jeffrey Walker, was such an incredible human being -- and I am not just saying that because he was married to me (smile)! JD loved EVERYONE!! Literally loved EVERYONE!! He never met a stranger and his goal was always to serve others.... despite his illness and at times, even at his own peril.

JD loved to see people happy. He was an incredible chef who used his talents to nurture others. Our home would often be filled on Sundays with folks who just wanted to some good food and great fellowship. The largest crowd numbered about 50!! And everyone was welcomed - even folks he was meeting for the very first time. He loved and cared for PEOPLE and created a home for many.

The craziness of the last few weeks makes me appreciate who he was even more. We are not even being civil towards one another, let alone being loving or kind. So in honor of this amazing, gentle giant who loved people deeply, I am pleased to announce the adoption of a room at the Nashville Hope Lodge in his name!

For those unaware, the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program provides free lodging for cancer patients who are getting treatment far from home. The program offers "a home away from home for people facing cancer and their caregivers". What better way to honor a man who willingly opened his home to folks from all walks of life, than to do this small thing that demonstrates the personal investment I make towards reaching my big audacious goal -- to ensure EVERYONE has the same opportunity to survive cancer and survive it well!

Happy Birthday, JD!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for inspiring me every day to keep investing!

Hi, I'm Dr. Karen!

For years, I have been obsessed with understanding why some communities are more greatly impacted by disease than others. So as a medical/graduate student, I decided that I wanted to make sure that everyone had equal access to healthcare and we would no longer have underserved populations in the U.S.

This blog, and this site, is dedicated to the pursuit of eradicating health disparities and empowering communities and individuals to take charge of their own health.
