It has been far too long since my last post and even longer since I’ve written with any regularity. The end of 2013 was quite busy and even more stressful, so I decided to take a mental health break. Yes, a much needed opportunity to change pace and have a few moments to collect my thoughts before the new year. So often we get into a rut –working, fighting, pushing towards a goal – and forget to stop and take stock of where we are currently, and whether our goals are still the same. My hope is that each of you can carve out space in your lives to do the same. It is so very important for us maintaining our mental health and quality of life.
Those of you who were able to tune into Touch 106.1FM on Sunday, January 5th, know that mental health will be the theme of the RadioTalk series for the next few months. Sister Andrena and I opened up our monthly discourse talking about the case of Dr. Teleka Patrick. By now, my hope is that you have heard about the 30 year-old physician who has been missing for over a month. But if not, here’s a link to a short overview. Her ex-husband finally spoke up and the bottom line is that this young woman had likely been suffering from mental illness and failed to seek medical attention. Ironic since she was a physician AND training to become a mental health professional.
That’s about 57.7 million people!!
Those brave enough to tell their friends and/or family that they may need assistance dealing with mental illness are told to pray harder, exercise more, eat more vegetables, hang upside down – instead of having their concerns validated and being supported while they seek medical attention.
It is my contention that many of the chronic health conditions (e.g. obesity, hypertension, drug/tobacco abuse) that plague our nation and ravage our minority populations stem from issues related to mental health. So I decided that, for the next few months at least, I would take some time to focus on mental health. For how can we heal the body if the mind is not well?
Hope you will join the discussion -- let's make 2014 a truly happy and healthy year!!
